Graves writes in the style of Classical authors. It’s been a while since I’ve read about Monophysites and Arians.
Belisarius fights off the Persians; he captures Carthage; next Sicily; and soon all of Italy south of the Po. Justinian once again portrayed himself as the brilliant warrior-pope, while the General was stigmatized by slanderous lies. I just went a long way to say a simple thing – Robert Graves was one of the creators of historical fiction.
That’s my guess, anyway. The first is that I loved Graves’ Claudius novels and welcomed the opportunity to read another of his books. The most interesting and well-drawn characters are actually their wives Antoninus and Theodora. The accounts of his successes in Persia, Carthage, and Italy, are depicted at length.

Graves also attempts to write in the style of a contemporary Roman text.
