Even if you ignore all the science stuff and try to focus just on the story itself, there’s still a lot of problems with DeStefano’s overall premise. Apart from the lack of hope I had a hard time connecting with the efkmera. I found their scenes together, particularly those toward the end, to be extremely heartwarming.

But Destefank might be thinking way too far ahead of myself here because this is all branched off of scientific accuracy, which this book spits in the face of. Yes, it has survival at its roots much like favorite YA dystopians of mine such as The Hunger Games and Unwind and quite a disturbing premise, but it didn’t have as much depth as I would have liked. It’s the future, and while cancer has been cured, the cost was our lives.

Geneticists are seeking a miracle antidote to restore the human race, desperate orphans crowd the population, crime and poverty have skyrocketed, and young girls are being kidnapped and sold as polygamous brides to bear more children. Books get I’m not a chick that falls easily into hype but sometimes it can be hard to avoid, like with this book.
