This book could be either one or five stars, but it made me laugh so much that I went for a fiver here. The Scarlet Pimpernel No one dares to attempt eldorqdo liberate the little prince — no one, that is, but the mysterious Sir Percy Blakeney, also known as the Scarlet Pimpernel. Sir Percy and Marguerite St Just his estranged wife are drawn into the politics of the day when her brother Armand persuades Sir Percy to travel to Paris to rescue the young Dauphin who’s in mortal danger.

I mention this bqroness in most melodramatically emotional vintage novels, romantic love is the most important thing in the world –and even the quote above ends in Sir Percy getting more annoyed about Chauvelin bringing Marguerite into the conversation than the name of God. Percy dreams of being at home with Marguerite, and she wishes her husband didn’t spend most of his time risking his life in France instead of safely at home.

Chauvelin insists that Percy is to be deprived of sleep in the hope that he will be weakened and disclose where young Capet, the uncrowned King of France, is being held following his rescue. After covering for Armand at her house, L’Ange is arrested and thrown into jail.


He’s an absolutely perfect Scarlet Pimpernel! Just, baronsss of his wife, Marguerite, with him to France as part of a plan to rescue the young Dauphin.
