Interconnections, Second Edition is about what goes on inside the boxes that move data around the Internet. These boxes are variously called bridges, routers, switches, and hubs. protocols exist, and it is hard to get information about them. J. Shoch, “Internetwork Naming, Addressing, and Routing,”. You will gain a deeper understanding of the range of solutions possible and find valuable information on protocols for which documentation is not readily available elsewhere. However, it is still on the INE recommended reading list so I believe this is why the book continuously is sold but I think its fair to say the book has some excellent foundational knowledge for those who need it and for the rest of us, its kind of a distraction.

I skipped those chapters, since I am content to use the algorithms built into modern networking equipment.

Opening up to chapter 4, I had my entire world blown upon discovering source-routing brouters I’d only known L2-transparent methodology — this coming from someone who’s worked with IEEE This book won’t tell you which buttons to push to set up a particular switch or router, but it will help you understand how any piece of networking equipment or software actually works, which is a huge help with troubleshooting. My only complaint is that the final chapter could have become something more extensive, proticols something that the computing world needs more than just another book of packet diagrams.
This is a great book for those interested in the details of networks, particularly in comparisons of different protocols, and the different approaches they take to networking problems. But it is solidly grounded in real-life experience — Perlman has spent years designing and implementing network protocols and algorithms most notably the spanning tree algorithm used in most bridges and uses that experience to provide practical illustrations of the theory.
