The Death of Virgil by Hermann Broch

As is my wont, I approached with no background ammo: If I love how the author writes I can read and enjoy almost any book even if the content isn’t something I would normally pick, if I’m neutral or don’t notice the writing I can like the other parts, but if the language doesn’t work for me I can’t enjoy the book at all.

Its philosophy, though rich, is loosely articulated and hidden in language that tends to obscure meaning in ambiguity and tautology. In this book, Virgil is dying see the title and on his deathbed, while feverish and hallucinating, he looks back on his life virgolio work and feels that he has failed in what he tried to do, which was to create a work of art that would both mirror the real world and show how to make it better.

Equally opposing forces drawn kicking and screaming into an unholy unity. His work has been insincere, his eye for beauty has led him astray, he has been no help to the real human world. It wasn’t because of the obvious things – bad writing, one-dimensional hermamn, uninteresting plot – or because of a pet peeve, but I had to force myself to finish it. Whether you believe or not, you must undergo this trial whereby you know there are things you cannot know.

I finished it in just a few days, practically in a trance. I have a very low tolerance for such writing and, when I come across things like this, divorced from their context, I wonder how I can have got through the novel once, let alone four times: It is the reign of the Emperor Augustus, and Publius Vergilius Maro, the poet of the Aeneid and Caesar’s enchanter, has been summoned to the palace, where he will shortly die.

But lets not quibble. In the end, the highs far outweigh the lows of this novel though there are some pretty significant portions of the book that I could not get past fast enough.

Now, I do find the fleshless union with Plotia, along with part 4, the Homecoming, to be the most lyrical and magical renditions in the book, but still.
